353 | books, Pokémon Shield, and a fic rec

► I am deeply, deeply delighted by how much response I got to my last post asking people to share five of their 5 star reads! It’s been so much fun—seeing what titles resonate with people, chatting about books, being reminded of books I also loved or am interested in checking out, finding new things I’d like to read. ♥ If you haven't shared your five yet, please feel very free to head over and do so!

► Time for my unofficial weekly Pokémon Shield update! I haven’t gotten too far since last update—since then, I’ve beaten the third gym, went around catching a few Pokémon, and now I’m on the road towards the fourth gym. More thoughts in bullet-point form below! beneath the cut )

► I have made no progress on Ghost Game, but I do come to you with a completely unrelated fic rec! I’ve spent a little over a week devouring this during my commutes, lunchbreaks, and illicit bedtime reading sessions, and absolutely adored it. The characters felt so vivid and human, and I’m struck by how, despite its length, it never dragged for me, always remaining engaging. The author absolutely ended it at the right point, but at the same time, a part of me felt like I could have continued on reading about Ursula’s life forever and ever. Very good, very satisfying.
The Winter of Widows (ASOIAF, OFC & Historical Ensemble, 583K)
When she awoke to a new life in Westeros, Ursula Mires nearly did the smart thing. Only a year away from becoming sworn to the Faith as a septa and being free to live in relative comfort and safety in one of the more prestigious Reach cloisters, she was content with her lot in life. Her advice, slowly fed to her father over many years, had enabled her family to survive the Dance and rise in station. House Mires had its legacy secured, until tragedy struck early that winter. Now Ursula is heir to a floundering House she does not want, in a war-torn land that she must drag out of the mud. Many ladies are in her position in what maesters would later call ‘the winter of widows’.

Only Ursula knows what is coming next, and she’s not sure if her house will survive it.

Product Review: Miss Jones Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: I picked up this package of bake-it-yourself cookie dough because it's grain-free. I'm not a huge fan of almond flour, but I was hoping because it was in a blend it wouldn't have the usual almond flour characteristics (nubbly, greasy, almondy (honestly it felt like I hit some shell once or twice)), but it does. Still, I persisted. The chocolate is nice and there's a lot of it, and the cookies were the right amount of sweetness for me, though the coconut sugar gives it that burnt marshmallow flavor I like in burnt marshmallows but find distracting elsewhere.

The cookie lumps don't spread on their own in the oven, so I flattened them with a spatula after about ten minutes and then let them cook about four minutes longer. They bake up chewy on the edges and nice and gooey on the inside.

I have other DIY doughs I like better, but this is a decent vegan paleo chocolate chip cookie. Miss Jones also has a keto version. I found these at my fancy local natural grocery store.

Current Ingredients: Grain-Free Flour Blend (almond, tapioca, arrowroot), Coconut Sugar, Chocolate Chips (unsweetened chocolate, chocolate liquor, cane sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla), Coconut Oil, Water, Coconut Flour, Vanilla Flavor, Salt, Baking Soda, Cream of Tartar.

Product Review: Otto's Grain-Free Baking Powder

Yeah, it's baking powder and it only has three ingredients, but I'm here to tell you it works fine and is completely normal in every way because when I was reading reviews for it people were like, "Tastes funny???" I bought it anyway, because if you're using so much baking powder you can taste it, that sounds like a you problem. It does not taste funny. It's grain-free and made with cassava starch (tapioca starch) instead of corn starch, that's all. It's also aluminum free and certified gluten free.

It comes in an 8 oz pouch with a velcro-type seal and says you should use it within six months of opening. I bought mine at the fancy local natural grocery store, but it's also available on Amazon or direct from Otto himself.

Current Ingredients: Cassava Starch, Sodium Bicarbonate, Monocalcium Phosphate

ragdoll ([personal profile] ragdoll) wrote in [community profile] addme_fandom2026-03-27 07:22 am

Hello, it's me

Name: [personal profile] ragdoll
Age group:Legally 60s, mentally 20s, physically 100s
Country: US
Subscription/Access Policy: It's been awhile since I've been on here so I'm probably pretty good about mutual access and subscriptions as long as people are the same. I have filters on here that are probably utterly null and void, so will probably be an open book for at least most of it.

Main Fandoms:

Star Trek: pretty much all of them except maybe VOY since it's never been my thing. TOS, DS9 and LD are my top contenders. I cosplay Commander Pelia, girl!Boimler, and my ancient TOS OC, plus I'm attempting to dress as an Andorian this year.

Doctor Who: I've been a DW fan since 1978 when I came across it by accident on BBC 1 in a hotel room in Stratford. My Doctors are: 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12. I've met every one from Jon Pertwee through Jodie Whittaker, including Richard E Grant. (I'm sure I will meet Ncuti Gatwa some day.) I've met nearly every companion going back to Carole Anne Ford and William Russell, and through Millie Gibson. My unicorn is Karen Gillan. I thought I'd finally be able to cross her off my list at NYCC last year, but wound up having to cancel all my plans due to health stuff. 😭 I co-writer THE book on DW fandom in the US, am Masquerade director at Gallifrey One and LI Who. I also cosplay as 13, an Osgood, several versions of Donna Noble, and Joy Almondo plus I have a variant 13 who is a mash up of 13 and Sylvi from Loki.

MCU especially Thor, Jane Foster, Loki, Ant-Man, Shang Chi, Natasha Romanov, Alexei, Trevor Slattery, the Vision-Maximoff family, Agatha Harkness, Lilia Calderu, Kamala Khan & family, Fantastic Four, OG Guardians of the Galaxy, Peggy Carter, and Black Panther. I was a Marvel comics fan for years, and the MCU just makes me very happy overall.

Star Wars: I've been a fan since I saw the first one in the theater (6 times) as a 14 year old in 1977. The OT is still near and dear to me. I don't hate any of the films although Rise of Skywalker is dreadful. Andor was brilliant. I am, however, obsessed with The Mandalorian and Din Grogu. I'm counting the days until I get to see my little green jelly bean again.

The Beatles: I've been a Beatles fan since I was a kid. I love them dearly. I have been obsessed with George Harrison for the past 50 years. He's my Grumpy Pisces Fish. I'm currently working on a book of essays about women influenced by them.

Critical Role: A good friend introduced me to The Legend of Vox Machina animated show some time after the second season aired on Prime. I enjoyed it, but promptly forgot the plot. Did a rewatch when S3 was released, then S3 and promptly forgot again. I never watched the live play show because why would I want to watch other people play D&D? How boring! I want to play myself. I knew the cast was coming to NYCC last year, but I wasn't that interested in meeting them. I knew they were doing a live show at Radio City Music Hall which was a wedding of two characters, one of which I was aware of thanks to some people doing a C2/Doctor Who cosplay mash up at Gallifrey years ago. I knew her name was Jester, she was a blue Tiefling, and people liked to cosplay her. Why would I want to go to her wedding? That would be silly! (Not that anyone asked me to go with) Then all of last year happened, and I had to cancel all my NYCC plans since I could barely walk due to multiple spinal surgeries over the summer.

(I'm getting to the point, I promise!) In November, The Mighty Nein started airing on Prime and the same CR obsessed friend prompted me to watch it. I grudgingly agreed to it. And within about 10 minutes of episode 1, I fell in love. It was like the D&D version of Guardians of the Galaxy for me. I got those characters. I fell in love with Jester and Fjord and Nott The Brave (no comma). I was blown away by episode 5. Once MN was over, I rewatched VM again...and hadn't remembered anything about it except for the characters and how pervy Scanlan was. I then started reading up on all the campaigns, watched the live wedding and cried, watched a few other one offs. My friend then pushed me to catch up on Campaign 4 during their holiday break, so I powered through 9 or 10 4-hour shows, and somewhere right after the overture, I fell in love with the entire Soldiers table. Then the Seekers table. And now the Schemers table. My friend and I now do watches "together" long distance every Thursday at 10 pm EST. Then talk a lot about theories etc. I've also developed crushes on basically the whole cast. Bi panic powers activate!

Other Fandoms: David Bowie, Muppets, Quantum Leap, Leverage/Leverage Redemption, Monty Python/the Rutles/Fawlty Towers, Twin Peaks, ASoIaF/House of the Dragon/A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, Barbie, Cozy mysteries, historical mysteries, Rolling Stones, 1960s music, 1980s (new wave, punk) music, HandMade Films, Steven Moffat shows, Death in Paradise, Big Bang Theory-verse, TTRPGs, RuPaul's Drag Race (US, Canada, UK, Down Undah etc), costume dramas (Upstairs Downstairs, I Claudius, Downton Abbey, Gilded Age, Murdoch Mysteries, Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries, Bookish, All Creatures etc)

Fannish Interests: Conventions: being on discussion panels, cosplay, some podcasts (I miss being on one regularly), former fan fic writer, former runner of online Fannish communities, former runner of fan fic/fan art exchanges, and other prompt challenge communities, discussion on social media, pro writer of reviews in essay form, travel to filming locations, making new friends, buying dolls or toys, reading tie-in novels/short stories etc

OTPs and Ships: Jester/Fjord, Tony/Pepper, Thor/Jane, Steve/Peggy, Carole/Val, Daemon/Rhaenyra, Wanda/Vision, Agatha/Rio, Amy/Rory, Doctor (esp 8, 11, 12 and 13)/River, Sophie/Harry Wilson, Parker/Hardison, probably others but I'm not that invested in shipping these days. Oh and George/my OC.

352.

I have a request for anyone who sees this on their reading page! Could you please give me a list of five books that you, personally, gave five stars to?

Doesn’t have to be Top Favorite Of All Time (and tbh it might even be more fun if they weren’t, necessarily!), just five books that you liked enough to rate five out of five stars. Any genre is fine, as is nonfiction or other formats like poetry collections and plays!

You also don't have to tell me why you picked those books if you don't want to; just the list is enough. (But if you do want to tell me, then of course feel free to do that as well! I'm open for everything.)

(Context: there’s a reading challenge I do every April—the spring semester of the Orilium Magical Readathon—and this year, one of the prompts I need to fulfill is “ask a friend for a list of five 5 star reads; pick one & read it”, but asking my irl friends would run the risk of me getting lists filled with daddy doms or inspirational nonfiction, neither of which is precisely in my wheelhouse, so I’ve decided to turn to fannish circles instead. Though I've now also become curious & excited to see what books people will name even outside of the context of my needing to pick one to read! <3 It's a fun question, I think.)
